State Representative Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna), who serves as the Wisconsin Assembly Majority Leader, will not run for re-election when his current term expires.
According to a release from his office, the lawmaker cited a desire to “pass the torch” to new state leaders as an influence for his decision to step down from elected office.
“Serving as an elected representative has been one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences of my life,” said Steineke in the statement. “However, I firmly believe the time has come to pass the torch and allow for others in our community to step forward and serve their neighbors.”
Before his current position, he worked as a supervisor in Vandenbroek. First elected to the state government in 2010, the lawmaker has served in the legislature for more than a decade. He was chosen to be assembly majority leader in 2014.
In the announcement, the prominent lawmaker celebrated legislative wins that were passed while he was in office: right-to-work legislation, altering the state’s budget, and wage reforms.
“Through bold, conservative leadership, we’ve been able to accomplish so much. From reforming government to work smarter and more efficiently, to turning our state’s bleak budget picture around into continuous surpluses, I’m extremely proud of the results legislative Republicans have been able to deliver over the past decade,” he continued.
Even though he will not seek another term, Steineke pledged to continue to support conservative policies as long as he remains in his position.
“As I refocus my efforts on returning to the private sector in the weeks and months ahead, I remain committed to doing everything in my power to advance conservative policies and serve as a check against the governor and his administration to prevent extreme ideologies from being enacted,” Steineke added.
